(aka: what no one tells you when you leave your full-time gig and do the damn thing)
This was a big leap… I was ready to build something of my own. Something more intentional. More personal. More me.
Now that I’m 3 months in, I wanted to share a few things I’ve learned since launching Annie Briening Consulting – for anyone else on the edge of a pivot, or just curious about what this new chapter really looks like.
Before I get into that, there’s something else that’s just as important to me: staying connected to the community that shaped me.
Living and working in the Florida Keys/Key West has given me more than just a gorgeous view – it’s given me perspective. Whether we’re doing business together or not, I’m committed to showing up, supporting locals and giving back in the ways that count.
Something I am super proud of: I recently graduated from Leadership Monroe County (proud alum of Class XXXII!) and was honored to be elected to the board of directors. Now that I’m on “my own” , staying connected to the community and relationships I’ve developed is part of my mission.
So here are 3 things I’ve learned since stepping out on my own:
1. Structure Gives You Freedom
Ironically, when you’re not working a 9-5, you do really need a system. I’ve found that having a rhythm to my days – and a clear plan for my clients – makes space for the creative, strategic thinking that I always felt gave me serious burnout. Chaos may look cool on TikTok, but trust me…clarity is the flex.
2. People Hire People
This business isn’t just about services, it’s about trust. Whether I’m helping with content creation, copywriting, campaign planning, or just bringing calm to the marketing storm, it always starts with real connection. That’s been the most rewarding (and validating) part so far: people don’t want a pitch, they want a partner.
3. The Right Clients Feel Easy
Not that the work is, but when the values align and the collaboration flows, the right clients bring out your best work. I’m learning to trust the red flags, honor the green lights and stay true to what this business is really about: smart strategy, meaningful connection and growth that feels good.
If you’re in the thick of your own business-building season, or just figuring out what’s next, I see you. And if you’re in the Keys and want to connect whether it’s over business, ideas or just a coffee – I’d love to hear from you.
Here’s to the next chapter. Let’s make it a good one!
